Mazda MX-5 Miata Fuel System Recall One federal campaign, in NHTSA’s own words

Dean McCrary Mazda has one NHTSA campaign open on the Mazda MX-5 Miata fuel system, model year 1999. Here is NHTSA’s own description of the issue:

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE NON-RETURN VALVE INSTALLED AT THE LOWER END OF THE FUEL FILLER PIPE CAN STICK DUE TO INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE VALVE CASE AND THE VALVE SHUTTER COMBINED WITH THE MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF THE FUEL HOSE BETWEEN THE FILLER PIPE AND THE FUEL TANK.

The repair is free — parts and labor, at any Mazda dealer, for the life of the vehicle. Check your VIN below to confirm your MX-5 Miata is included, or jump straight to what to do next.

Is This MX-5 Miata Included?

Enter the 17-character VIN and we query NHTSA in real time. The answer comes back for that one vehicle, and it covers every open campaign on it — not only the fuel system one on this page.

Or call and read the VIN to our service team.

The Campaign NHTSA Has Filed

Most recent first, one campaign in all. Each block below carries the defect, the risk and the remedy exactly as NHTSA filed it, with the date NHTSA received it and a link to check our reading against the original.

What NHTSA says the defect is

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE NON-RETURN VALVE INSTALLED AT THE LOWER END OF THE FUEL FILLER PIPE CAN STICK DUE TO INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE VALVE CASE AND THE VALVE SHUTTER COMBINED WITH THE MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF THE FUEL HOSE BETWEEN THE FILLER PIPE AND THE FUEL TANK.

The risk NHTSA states

THIS CAN CAUSE A "HARD TO REFUEL" CONDITION, AND IN SOME INSTANCES, A "FUEL SPIT BACK" DURING REFUELING.

The remedy NHTSA states

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE NON-RETURN VALVE WITH A MODIFIED RETURN VALVE.

What To Do From Here

Four steps, in order.

Run the VIN

Use the checker above, or nhtsa.gov/recalls. Both read the same federal record, and both answer for the one vehicle rather than the nameplate.

Book the repair

Schedule online or call . Give us the campaign number and we will confirm the parts are in hand before you come in.

Ask if parts are short

A campaign is sometimes announced before the remedy parts reach dealerships. If that is the case we will say so and put you on the list, rather than book a visit that cannot be completed.

Keep the paperwork

We give you written proof the campaign was closed. It is worth having: a buyer checking the federal record later sees the campaign, and the paperwork is what shows it was dealt with.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Fuel System Recall Questions

Does this campaign cover my MX-5 Miata?

Only a VIN answers that. A campaign covers a build range, so two vehicles of the same model year can be treated differently. The checker on this page queries NHTSA for one vehicle and returns every open campaign on it.

What does the repair cost?

Nothing. A federal safety recall remedy is performed at no charge to the owner — parts and labor — for the life of the vehicle, whatever the mileage and wherever the vehicle was bought.

Why is the wording on this page so formal?

Because it is not ours. The defect, risk and remedy text is NHTSA’s, reproduced without edit. Rewriting a safety notice into friendlier language would change what it says, and we would rather you read the original than our version of it.

Could something have changed since this page was written?

Yes. This page was checked against NHTSA on 2026-08-09, and campaigns are amended and superseded. The Mazda MX-5 Miata recall hub reads the federal database live every time it loads, so it is the current position; this page is the detail behind it.

MX-5 Miata Fuel System Recall Open? We Will Book It.

Call with the VIN, or book online. Recall work is performed at no charge to the owner, and we will confirm the parts before your visit.

Verified as of 2026-08-09 against the NHTSA federal recall database. Every defect, risk and remedy statement above is NHTSA’s own wording, reproduced without edit, and each campaign number links to the federal record it came from. Nothing on this page is a summary, an estimate or an inference.
