What Certification Actually Covers
Four things, and all four of them are Mazda’s rather than ours. Certification is the manufacturer’s determination, not a label a dealership applies: the vehicle passes Mazda’s own inspection first, and Mazda’s coverage attaches to it after that. Terms are set by Mazda and can change, so ask us to show you the ones that apply to the specific vehicle before you sign anything.
Mazda’s Inspection, Not A Dealership Checklist
Before a used Mazda can be certified it goes through a 160-point inspection, inside and out, carried out by a factory-trained Mazda technician. Mazda describes the scope as running from heating and air conditioning through the brakes, the transmission and the engine to the interior and the exterior of the vehicle. That is a manufacturer standard, and it is the part a multi-point reconditioning inspection — ours or anyone’s — is not.
A Limited Vehicle Warranty, Added On Top
The Mazda Certified Pre-Owned Limited Vehicle Warranty runs 12 months or 12,000 miles with no deductible on covered repairs, and it is added to whatever remains of the vehicle’s original 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty rather than replacing it. Where that factory coverage has already run out, Mazda states the certified warranty takes effect at the time of purchase.
Powertrain Coverage, And The Clock It Runs On
The Limited Powertrain Warranty runs 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first — counted from the day the vehicle was originally purchased new, not the day you buy it. That is the term people misread most often, and it is worth working out before you decide. Mazda summarises the covered range as “flywheel to freeze plug, thermostat to turbocharger”, with no out-of-pocket cost on covered parts at Mazda dealers throughout the United States. Twenty-four-hour emergency roadside assistance runs for as long as that coverage does, and covers jump starts, lockout assistance, a flat tire, towing to a Mazda dealership and a fuel delivery.
The Record, And What Happens If You Sell
Each Mazda Certified Pre-Owned vehicle comes with a CARFAX® Vehicle History Report and a one-year CARFAX® Buyback Guarantee, so the ownership record is in front of you before you decide. Mazda states that both certified warranties are transferable to a future owner at no cost, so the coverage follows the vehicle if you sell it on rather than ending with you.
What Makes A Used Mazda Eligible
Mazda does not publish a firm age or mileage limit on its consumer pages. Its buyer guide describes certified vehicles as typically six model years old or newer, which is a description rather than a limit, and neither page states a mileage cap at all. So the two figures below are Dean McCrary Mazda’s own answer, supplied by the dealership rather than quoted from Mazda. Treat them as the shape of what qualifies, not as a rule you can hold Mazda to — certification is the manufacturer’s determination, vehicle by vehicle.
Six Years Old Or Newer
Six model years is the age the dealership works to when it is asked. Mazda itself hedges the same figure as “typically” six years or less and publishes no cap on its program page, so this is our answer rather than a Mazda term. A vehicle sitting near the line is worth asking about instead of assuming either way.
80,000 Miles Or Under
Eighty thousand miles is the figure the dealership gives, and it is worth being clear about where it comes from: Mazda publishes no mileage limit on either of its certified pages. You will find the same number quoted around the internet by third parties, and that is not why it is here — it is here because the store gave it as its own answer.
Condition — And What We Are Not Going To Tell You
A certified vehicle also has to be in acceptable condition, and that is where this page stops. We have no Mazda-published list of condition requirements and the dealership has not given us one, so we are not going to print the list you will find on third-party sites as though it were Mazda’s. Two things this page deliberately leaves open, rather than answering from a source that cannot carry them: the condition criteria above, and how the ordinary New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers on a vehicle sold on without certification. Mazda publishes transferability for the two certified warranties — that is on this page — and says nothing we could retrieve about the uncertified case.
The Mazda Certified Pre-Owned Program, Explained
Certified is a manufacturer standard, not a dealership adjective
Any dealership can call a used car inspected. Mazda Certified Pre-Owned means something narrower: the vehicle has passed a 160-point inspection carried out by a factory-trained Mazda technician, and Mazda’s own warranty coverage has attached to it as a result. That is the whole difference between a Mazda Certified Pre-Owned vehicle and any other pre-owned Mazda on a lot, including ours. Every pre-owned vehicle at Dean McCrary Mazda is worked through by our technicians and comes with a vehicle history report, which is our practice; certification adds Mazda’s inspection and Mazda’s coverage on top, which is a different thing.
Two warranties, two different clocks
The Limited Vehicle Warranty runs 12 months or 12,000 miles from the certified purchase, with no deductible on covered repairs, and it sits on top of whatever is left of the original 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The Limited Powertrain Warranty runs 7 years or 100,000 miles — but from the day the vehicle was first bought new, so a three-year-old car has roughly four years of it left rather than seven. Ask us for the in-service date of the vehicle you are looking at and we will work the remainder out with you rather than leaving you to guess from a web page.
Why this page names a figure Mazda does not publish
Because the question a shopper actually asks — will a car of this age and this mileage be certified — deserves an answer, and the honest answer here has two halves. Mazda publishes no firm cap: its buyer guide says “typically” six years and its program page says nothing at all about mileage. Dean McCrary Mazda works to six years and 80,000 miles, and that figure is the dealership’s rather than the manufacturer’s. Both halves are true at once, and a page that gave you only the second one would be telling you Mazda said something Mazda has not said. Mazda states the term as 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, from that original new purchase — so on a three-year-old vehicle roughly four years of it remain. How does roadside assistance compare with a new Mazda’s?⌄
A Mazda Certified Pre-Owned vehicle carries 24-hour emergency roadside assistance for as long as its powertrain coverage runs, which Mazda publishes as 7 years or 100,000 miles from the original new purchase. On a new Mazda the dealership gives the roadside term as 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, matching the New-Vehicle Limited Warranty — that one is our figure rather than one Mazda publishes on the pages we work from, so ask us to confirm it for the vehicle you are considering.
If I sell the vehicle, does the coverage go with it?⌄
For a certified vehicle, yes: Mazda states that both the Limited Vehicle and Limited Powertrain warranties are transferable to a future owner at no cost. What we cannot tell you from a Mazda source is how the ordinary New Vehicle Limited Warranty behaves on a vehicle sold on without certification — Mazda’s certified page does not answer it, so neither does this one.
How do I find out whether a particular vehicle is certified?⌄
Ask, or read it off the listing. Certification is Mazda’s determination and certified stock turns over, so the reliable answer is a live one rather than a rule on a page. The certified inventory page shows what is on the ground, and a sales consultant will confirm it for a specific vehicle before you drive over.
