A Year of On-Time Payments Should Count for Something
Buy Here Pay Here Alternative · Financing That Reports
Two buyers can pay a buy here pay here lot on time, every month, for an entire year, and only one of them finishes that year with anything to show for it on a credit report. The difference is a policy the lot sets for itself, not something any law or lender requires of it. Financing arranged through our finance department works differently — the loan reports to the bureaus as a matter of course, and checking what Mazda Financial Services and our lender partners can offer costs nothing to find out.1
Dealer-Financed vs. Buy Here Pay Here
The sticker on the windshield can look identical either way. What's different is the loan sitting behind it — who holds it, who's watching it, and what it does for you afterward.
Dealer-Financed
A conventional installment loan, funded and held by an outside lender rather than by us.
- Payment history posts to all three bureaus, every cycle
- Backed by Mazda Financial Services and our bank & credit union network
- Lenders bid against each other for your loan
- A soft pull shows what's possible without touching your score1
- Rate and terms are locked in writing before you sign
Buy Here Pay Here
An in-house note the lot originates, services, and collects on itself.
- Whether it reports anywhere is entirely up to the lot
- There's no separation between who sold you the car and who's collecting on it
- No outside underwriter ever looks at the file
- One lot's comfort level is the only approval standard
- Interest and price tend to absorb the lot's own risk
Before You Choose Between Them
Three questions worth settling before a buy here pay here lot gets your signature instead of us.
Does BHPH Build Credit?
A credit file only grows when someone tells the bureaus what happened on the account. Twelve, twenty-four, or forty-eight clean payments in a row mean nothing to a score if that data was never sent — and sending it is a single yes-or-no choice that sits entirely with whichever lot holds the note.
No Credit Check Car Loans, Explained
A lot that skips the credit check hasn't done you a favor; it's simply chosen to find out how you pay by watching you actually do it, on its own vehicle, at its own price. Read on for what that arrangement is quietly built to protect.
In-House Financing vs. Dealership Financing
The two loans are built differently from the moment you sign — different lender, different oversight, different incentives on both sides. None of that is cosmetic once you look closely at the paperwork.
Buy Here Pay Here Questions
Does a buy here pay here loan ever make sense?⌄
In a narrow set of cases, yes — mainly when a file is thin or troubled enough that nothing else is open right now, and a vehicle is needed immediately. Even then, it's worth confirming that dealer financing has actually been ruled out first, since a BHPH note that never reports leaves you with nothing to build on for your next loan, while a reporting account does.
Does getting turned down at a BHPH lot mean Dean McCrary Mazda will turn me down too?⌄
No — the two run on entirely different underwriting. A BHPH lot is deciding against its own money and its own comfort level, with no outside review involved. An application through our finance department gets shopped to Mazda Financial Services and a network of bank and credit union partners, each working from its own criteria, so one lender's answer doesn't decide what the others will say. Checking costs nothing, since it starts with a soft pull.
Why can a BHPH lot skip the credit check that everyone else runs?⌄
A credit check exists to help a lender judge risk before it puts money on the line that isn't already its own. When the lot itself is the lender, there's no outside underwriter requiring that step at all — the owner can approve or decline on personal judgment alone, with or without pulling a report. Rate follows the same logic in reverse: our financing routes through lenders staking their own capital, and because more than one of them wants the loan, they end up bidding the cost down instead of simply pricing it for their own comfort.
I'm not sure which of the three guides below applies to me — how do I decide?⌄
That depends on what's actually unresolved for you. Curious whether a BHPH payment history does anything for your credit file over time? Start with the credit-building page. Wondering why a lot can wave off a credit check in the first place? The no-credit-check page covers that. Trying to understand who you'd actually be borrowing from and how the terms get set? In-house versus dealership financing walks through the mechanics. Read whichever question matches what's stopping you, in whatever order makes sense for you.
Know Your Options Before a BHPH Lot Locks You In
It takes a few minutes to see what Mazda Financial Services and our lender partners are willing to offer, and the soft pull used to check it leaves your score exactly where it is. Get that answer before signing anything with a lot that may never report the loan at all.
Financing is provided by third-party lenders, including Mazda Financial Services and Dean McCrary Mazda’s bank and credit union partners; Dean McCrary Mazda arranges financing and does not itself extend credit. The soft credit check described on this page is not visible to other lenders and is not used in credit scoring; a hard inquiry, which can affect your score, occurs only once, after a vehicle has been chosen and specific terms accepted in writing. Whether any third-party buy here pay here lot mentioned on this page reports payment history to the credit bureaus is a policy that lot sets for itself, not something Dean McCrary Mazda verifies or controls; ask that lot directly if its reporting practice matters to you. Nothing on this page is a commitment to lend or a guarantee of approval or of any particular terms. See a Dean McCrary Mazda finance manager for complete program details.
