This Model Year Opens Mazda’s 2021–2025 Table
Mazda published the same Mazda MX-5 Miata maintenance schedule across 2021–2025 — five model years — and this is the first of them. The revision that opens the span lands on this model year, which is why it is not read off the model year before it. The model years after it inside that span read the same table unchanged, and each has its own page saying so.
The Rear Differential Oil Row Is Gone
The model years before these print a rear differential oil row on both schedules, carrying a footnote and no mark in any column: if the component has been submerged in water, the oil should be replaced. These model years remove the row and its footnote with it, and the remaining footnotes renumber. There was never a mileage to state for it, and there is none now.
Not One Interval Figure Moved With It
Every stated interval in both tables is the figure Mazda printed for the model years before these, verified row by row and mark by mark. On a stated-figure basis this nameplate is one schedule across its whole window, which is the longest unbroken run found anywhere in this research. What changed is which rows exist, and that is still real to an owner reading their own book.
The Soft-Top Drain Filter Is Printed for Some of These Years and Not Others
Outside the schedule tables, in the exterior maintenance chapter, Mazda prints: clean the drain filter at least once a year. It prints that sentence in the books for the first three of these model years and in no later one — the phrase does not appear anywhere in the books for the last two. So an owner of one of the earlier three has a published figure and an owner of the later two does not, and this page does not supply one for them. Whether the part changed or the instruction simply moved is not established, and nothing is stated either way.

Schedule 1 — Normal Driving
These model years’ normal-driving table, grouped by the interval Mazda marks each row at.
Sourced from the Scheduled Maintenance (U.S.A., Canada, and Puerto Rico) section of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata owner’s manual, section pages 301 to 306, confirmed identical in every later manual in this span and against Mazda’s standalone scheduled-maintenance excerpts for all five model years. The drain filter figure is from the exterior maintenance chapter of the same books, and the model years whose books omit it are named rather than covered over. On the MX-5 Miata a single condition moves the entire schedule to Schedule 2 — the oil, the disc brakes, the gearbox oil and every chassis row with it. Several Mazdas of the same era do something different and change only the oil interval; this one does not, and the two models of severe service may never be written each other’s way.
Flexible and Fixed Are a Separate Question
Mazda prints: engine oil flexible maintenance is selected by default for U.S.A. and Puerto Rico residents, and if either extended periods of idling or low-speed operation such as a police car, taxi or driving-school car, or driving in dusty conditions applies, follow Schedule 2 with engine oil fixed maintenance. So the 5,000-mile oil figure is not the severe interval for every MX-5 Miata driven in severe conditions — it is the fixed one.
Which Table Applies to Yours
Mazda’s list includes driving for long periods in extremely humid climates and driving in extremely hot conditions, and on this car that moves everything rather than one row. Schedule 2 — Severe Driving
The severe-driving table for these model years, and the two rows it changes that most severe schedules do not.
Every 5,000 Miles or 6 Months
Engine oil and filter on the fixed basis, disc brakes, engine coolant level, brake and clutch fluid level, tire inflation pressure and tire wear, function of all lights, all locks and hinges lubricated, and washer fluid level. Tire rotation runs at the same cadence and is printed as a sentence: rotate every 8,000 km (5,000 miles).
Manual Transmission Oil — Halved
Mazda prints, on Schedule 1: replace every 96,000 km (60,000 miles) or 4 years. On Schedule 2 it prints: replace every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) or 2 years. Severe driving on this car does not only shorten the oil change — it doubles how often the gearbox oil is replaced, which is a real difference in what a customer pays for.
Every 15,000 Miles or 18 Months
Fuel lines and hoses, brake lines, hoses and connections, steering operation and linkages, front and rear suspension with ball joints and wheel bearing axial play, driveshaft dust boots, and the bolts and nuts on the chassis and body. The same rows sit at every 15,000 miles or 24 months on Schedule 1 — the mileage matches and the month figure does not.
The Longer Severe Rows
Every 20,000 miles or 24 months — drive belts. Every 30,000 miles or 36 months — air filter, and hoses and tubes for emission. At 35,000 miles or 42 months, once — exhaust system and heat shields. Spark plugs and engine coolant carry the same figures they carry on Schedule 1, and the emergency flat tire repair kit is inspected annually. Mazda adds one note to the severe air filter row: if the vehicle is operated in very dusty or sandy areas, clean and if necessary replace the air filter more often than the recommended intervals.
