Mazda Coolant Flush
A coolant flush and a coolant replacement are the same scheduled job under two names, and Mazda schedules it rarely: the first change does not come round until 120,000 miles on most of this lineup. What matters far more than the name is using FL-22, which Mazda specifies and warns about in writing.
What the Flush Covers
The system drained and refilled with the coolant Mazda names, on the interval Mazda prints for your model.

Old coolant drawn out under pressure

Rather than topped up over the old fluid

With genuine Mazda coolant
A Long Interval, Stated Twice
Mazda gives a first-change figure and a different repeat figure, and both are printed rather than derived.

The Coolant and the Volume
One specification, several capacities, and one thing Mazda leaves unstated.
FL-22, and Nothing Else
Mazda’s note is explicit that using coolant other than the specified coolant may cause serious damage to the engine and cooling system. A flush that refills with something generic is not the job Mazda scheduled.
How Much It Takes
Approximately 6.0 L (6.3 US qt) on the MX-5 pair, 6.5 L (6.9 US qt) on the CX-50 Hybrid engine circuit, 8.0 L (8.5 US qt) on the CX-5, and 10.0 L (10.6 US qt) on the CX-70 and CX-90 in normal specification.
One Volume Mazda Does Not Settle
On the CX-70 and CX-90, Mazda names an EV system coolant in the schedule and a water-cooled charge air cooler circuit in the capacities table, and does not state that they are the same circuit. This page therefore quotes no EV-system capacity for those two.
Does Towing or Heat Bring It Forward?
Mazda publishes no severe coolant interval on any model. The CX-70 and CX-90 do carry a larger coolant capacity in large towing capacity specification, which is a volume rather than a schedule.
Eight Models: No Weather Condition at All
On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, Mazda lists three severe-driving conditions: extended idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. Heat, humidity and rain are not on the list. If none of those describes how you drive, Mazda’s normal schedule is the one for your car.
CX-50 Hybrid: A Fourth Condition, for Load
The CX-50 Hybrid carries the same three conditions plus one more, and it is about load rather than weather: a heavily loaded vehicle — towing a trailer, using a camper, using a car-top carrier. Mazda maps that fourth condition to the transmission fluid and both differential oils, inspected at 20,000 miles and replaced at 40,000 miles, and not to the oil.
CX-5: Humidity Counts, Item by Item
The CX-5 is the one model where Mazda maps each severe condition to specific items rather than to the whole car. Extremely humid climates and extensive brake use move the brake fluid to annual replacement; short trips, extreme heat and heavy rain move the drive belt inspection to every oil change. Mazda triggers the 5,000-mile oil interval only from prolonged idling, unpaved or dusty roads and sustained mountain driving.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF: Schedule 2
These two work differently again. Mazda lists nine severe conditions and any one of them moves the car to Schedule 2 in full — and extremely hot conditions, extremely humid climates and repeated short-distance driving are all on that list. Schedule 2 brings 5,000-mile tire rotations, 5,000-mile brake inspections and 30,000-mile manual transmission oil. The oil itself stays on the flexible wrench-indicator interval unless the car is idled heavily or driven in dust.

Mazda Schedules This Rarely
The first coolant change is at 120,000 miles or 120 months on most of the lineup and 100,000 miles on the CX-50 Hybrid. If someone has quoted you a coolant flush at 30,000 miles on a Mazda, it is not Mazda’s schedule they are quoting.
The Fluid Matters More Than the Method
FL-22 is named by Mazda, with a written warning against substitutes. Whatever the job is called, what goes back in is the part that determines whether it was done to Mazda’s specification.
Mazda Coolant Flush Questions
How often does a Mazda need a coolant flush?⌄
First at 120,000 miles or 120 months on most of the lineup, then every 60,000 miles or 60 months. The CX-50 Hybrid is first at 100,000 miles and then every 50,000 miles, stated in miles only.
Is a coolant flush the same as a coolant change?⌄
On Mazda’s schedule there is one item, and it says replace. Whatever the job is called, the parts that matter are the interval and the coolant — FL-22 — that goes back in.
Do the hybrids need a different coolant service?⌄
They have an additional circuit. The CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid carry an EV system coolant row first replaced at 120,000 miles or 180 months; the CX-50 Hybrid’s EV system coolant is first at 150,000 miles.
How much is a Mazda coolant flush?⌄
It depends on the model, the circuit and the capacity, which is why pricing is kept on the service offers page rather than written into this one.
