Mazda Coolant Service
Mazda’s coolant intervals are the longest in the schedule and the easiest to get wrong, because the first change and every change after it are different numbers — and because five models have two cooling circuits rather than one. Mazda also names the coolant: FL-22, and it warns in writing against using anything else.
What the Coolant Service Covers
The right coolant, the right circuit, and the level check Mazda schedules far more often than the replacement.

The type your engine is filled with

At the reservoir, cold

Hoses, clamps and the radiator
First Change, Then Every Change After
Mazda prints these as sentences rather than deriving them from the table, so they are among the most precisely stated figures in the schedule.
Sourced from the Scheduled Maintenance section of each model’s 2026 Mazda owner’s manual. Your own manual is the authority for your vehicle; bring the mileage and our team will read the table with you.
Which Coolant and How Much
One specification across the lineup, and capacities that vary a long way.
FL-22, Named and Warned About
Mazda specifies FL-22 type coolant across this lineup and states in its own note that using coolant other than the specified coolant may cause serious damage to the engine and cooling system. It is not a preference.
Capacities Vary Widely
Approximately 6.0 L (6.3 US qt) on the MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF, 8.0 L (8.5 US qt) on the CX-5, and 10.0 L (10.6 US qt) on the CX-70 and CX-90 in normal specification — 11.1 L (11.7 US qt) in large towing capacity specification.
The Turbo Models Have a Third Volume
On the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T versions of the Mazda3 pair, CX-30 and CX-50, Mazda lists the engine coolant plus a separate 1.6 L (1.7 US qt) for the water-cooled charge air cooler.
Does Gulf Coast Heat Shorten the Interval?
Mazda publishes no severe coolant interval on any model in this lineup, so the answer from Mazda’s schedule is no. What its severe conditions do change is set out below.
Eight Models: No Weather Condition at All
On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, Mazda lists three severe-driving conditions: extended idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. Heat, humidity and rain are not on the list. If none of those describes how you drive, Mazda’s normal schedule is the one for your car.
CX-50 Hybrid: A Fourth Condition, for Load
The CX-50 Hybrid carries the same three conditions plus one more, and it is about load rather than weather: a heavily loaded vehicle — towing a trailer, using a camper, using a car-top carrier. Mazda maps that fourth condition to the transmission fluid and both differential oils, inspected at 20,000 miles and replaced at 40,000 miles, and not to the oil.
CX-5: Humidity Counts, Item by Item
The CX-5 is the one model where Mazda maps each severe condition to specific items rather than to the whole car. Extremely humid climates and extensive brake use move the brake fluid to annual replacement; short trips, extreme heat and heavy rain move the drive belt inspection to every oil change. Mazda triggers the 5,000-mile oil interval only from prolonged idling, unpaved or dusty roads and sustained mountain driving.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF: Schedule 2
These two work differently again. Mazda lists nine severe conditions and any one of them moves the car to Schedule 2 in full — and extremely hot conditions, extremely humid climates and repeated short-distance driving are all on that list. Schedule 2 brings 5,000-mile tire rotations, 5,000-mile brake inspections and 30,000-mile manual transmission oil. The oil itself stays on the flexible wrench-indicator interval unless the car is idled heavily or driven in dust.

The First Change Is Not the Repeat Interval
On most of the lineup Mazda replaces the coolant first at 120,000 miles or 120 months and then every 60,000 miles or 60 months. Reading the first figure as the repeat one doubles the interval; reading the second as the first halves it.
The Electrified Models Have Two Circuits
The CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid carry an EV system coolant circuit alongside the engine one, first replaced at 180 months rather than 120. The CX-50 Hybrid runs shorter figures again and states them in miles only.
Mazda Coolant Service Questions
How often does Mazda coolant need changing?⌄
On most of the lineup, first at 120,000 miles or 120 months and then every 60,000 miles or 60 months. The CX-50 Hybrid is shorter: first at 100,000 miles, then every 50,000 miles, and Mazda states those in miles only with no month figure.
What coolant does a Mazda take?⌄
FL-22 type. Mazda’s own note warns that using coolant other than the specified coolant may cause serious damage to the engine and cooling system, so this is a specification rather than a suggestion.
Does my Mazda have two coolant circuits?⌄
On the CX-50 Hybrid, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, yes — an engine circuit and an EV system circuit, with their own intervals. Mazda prints a single coolant-level row for the vehicle, and on the CX-50 Hybrid instructs that both reservoir tanks are checked.
How much coolant does my Mazda hold?⌄
It varies more than most people expect: approximately 6.0 L (6.3 US qt) on the MX-5 pair, 8.0 L (8.5 US qt) on the CX-5 and 10.0 L (10.6 US qt) on the CX-70 and CX-90 in normal specification.
