Mazda Suspension Service

Mazda schedules the suspension as an inspection and never as a replacement. Front and rear suspension, ball joints and wheel bearing axial play, steering operation and linkages, and the driveshaft dust boots each have printed intervals — and the MX-5 pair are inspected more often than anything else in the lineup.

What the Suspension Inspection Covers

Mazda’s own rows, at your model’s own interval.

Front and rear suspension, ball joints and wheel bearing axial play inspected on Mazda’s printed schedule.
Steering operation and linkages inspected on the same interval, and the driveshaft dust boots on theirs.
Bolts and nuts on the chassis and body tightened, which Mazda schedules as its own row at every 20,000 miles or 24 months on ten of the twelve models.
Open recall and safety-campaign work checked against your vehicle identification number while the car is here, and carried out in the same visit where parts allow.

Three Intervals, One System

The MX-5 pair see these rows more often than any other model, in both of their schedules.

Ten Models
Every 20,000 Miles or 24 Months
On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-50 Hybrid, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid: suspension, ball joints and wheel bearing axial play; steering operation and linkages; driveshaft dust boots.
Bolts and nuts on the chassis and body are tightened at the same interval.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF — Schedule 1
Every 15,000 Miles or 24 Months
The same rows, more often, under Mazda’s normal schedule for these two.
The parking brake is inspected on the same interval, which is a row the other ten do not carry.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF — Schedule 2
Every 15,000 Miles or 18 Months
Under Schedule 2 the mileage is unchanged and the time limit shortens from 24 months to 18.
Any one of Mazda’s nine severe conditions moves the car there — including extremely hot conditions and extremely humid climates.

Inspected, Never Dated

Three things worth knowing before a suspension quote.

No Replacement Interval Exists

Mazda publishes no shock, strut, bush or ball joint replacement mileage on any of the twelve models. Components come off when the inspection finds play, a leak or damage.

Alignment Is Downstream

A worn component will not hold an alignment, which is why the inspection comes first. Mazda schedules no alignment interval either — see the wheel alignment page.

The Dust Boots Are Their Own Row

Mazda inspects driveshaft dust boots separately, at every 20,000 miles or 24 months on ten models and every 15,000 miles on the MX-5 pair. A split boot is a small finding with a large consequence.

Do Rough Roads Shorten the Interval?

On the MX-5 pair the time limit shortens under Schedule 2. On the other ten, Mazda states that everything except the oil keeps its normal interval — including these rows.

Eight Models: No Weather Condition at All

On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, Mazda lists three severe-driving conditions: extended idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. Heat, humidity and rain are not on the list. If none of those describes how you drive, Mazda’s normal schedule is the one for your car.

CX-50 Hybrid: A Fourth Condition, for Load

The CX-50 Hybrid carries the same three conditions plus one more, and it is about load rather than weather: a heavily loaded vehicle — towing a trailer, using a camper, using a car-top carrier. Mazda maps that fourth condition to the transmission fluid and both differential oils, inspected at 20,000 miles and replaced at 40,000 miles, and not to the oil.

CX-5: Humidity Counts, Item by Item

The CX-5 is the one model where Mazda maps each severe condition to specific items rather than to the whole car. Extremely humid climates and extensive brake use move the brake fluid to annual replacement; short trips, extreme heat and heavy rain move the drive belt inspection to every oil change. Mazda triggers the 5,000-mile oil interval only from prolonged idling, unpaved or dusty roads and sustained mountain driving.

MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF: Schedule 2

These two work differently again. Mazda lists nine severe conditions and any one of them moves the car to Schedule 2 in full — and extremely hot conditions, extremely humid climates and repeated short-distance driving are all on that list. Schedule 2 brings 5,000-mile tire rotations, 5,000-mile brake inspections and 30,000-mile manual transmission oil. The oil itself stays on the flexible wrench-indicator interval unless the car is idled heavily or driven in dust.

Mazda Schedules the Inspection, Not the Replacement

Front and rear suspension, ball joints and wheel bearing axial play are inspected every 20,000 miles or 24 months on ten of the twelve models, and every 15,000 miles on the MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF. No replacement mileage is published for any component on any model.

The MX-5 Pair Are Looked At Most Often

Under Mazda’s Schedule 2 — which extremely hot conditions and extremely humid climates both trigger — the time limit on those rows shortens from 24 months to 18, with the mileage unchanged.

Mazda Suspension Service Questions

How often does a Mazda suspension need inspecting?

Every 20,000 miles or 24 months on ten of the twelve 2026 models, and every 15,000 miles or 24 months on the MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF under Schedule 1 — 18 months under Schedule 2.

When do Mazda shocks or struts need replacing?

Mazda publishes no replacement interval for them on any model. They are replaced when the inspection finds a leak, damage or play, or when the car’s behaviour says so.

Does rough road use change the interval?

On the MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF, Schedule 2 shortens the time limit on these rows. On the other ten models Mazda states outright that every item except the oil keeps its normal interval.

How much is Mazda suspension work?

It depends entirely on the finding. Current service offers are on the service offers page.
