Mazda Transfer Case Service
The transfer case is the gearbox that sends drive to the rear axle on an i-ACTIV AWD® Mazda, and Mazda’s answer about servicing it is unusually clear: it specifies the oil, gives the capacity, and states that periodic replacement is not necessary. That is a real answer rather than a gap.
What the Transfer Case Service Covers
Mostly a check and an honest conversation, because Mazda schedules no replacement for it.

Mazda’s Answer Is No Interval
This is one of the family’s resolved negatives: Mazda states it rather than leaving it open.

The Oil and the Volume
Mazda names the fluid for every model that has one, and it is the same fluid.
Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1
The specification for the transfer case on every model in this lineup that carries one, and for the rear differential on most of them.
Capacities Are Small and They Vary
Approximately 0.35 L (0.37 US qt) on the CX-30, 0.40 L (0.42 US qt) on the CX-5 and CX-50, and 0.51 L (0.54 US qt) on the CX-70, CX-90 and both plug-in hybrids.
Which Models Actually Have One
i-ACTIV AWD® is standard on the CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid. On the Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback the transfer case row applies only to the all-wheel-drive trims.
Does Towing or Rough Road Use Change It?
Mazda publishes no severe transfer case interval on any model. The one place a driveline fluid does move under a Mazda condition is the CX-50 Hybrid, and it is not the transfer case.
Eight Models: No Weather Condition at All
On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, Mazda lists three severe-driving conditions: extended idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. Heat, humidity and rain are not on the list. If none of those describes how you drive, Mazda’s normal schedule is the one for your car.
CX-50 Hybrid: A Fourth Condition, for Load
The CX-50 Hybrid carries the same three conditions plus one more, and it is about load rather than weather: a heavily loaded vehicle — towing a trailer, using a camper, using a car-top carrier. Mazda maps that fourth condition to the transmission fluid and both differential oils, inspected at 20,000 miles and replaced at 40,000 miles, and not to the oil.
CX-5: Humidity Counts, Item by Item
The CX-5 is the one model where Mazda maps each severe condition to specific items rather than to the whole car. Extremely humid climates and extensive brake use move the brake fluid to annual replacement; short trips, extreme heat and heavy rain move the drive belt inspection to every oil change. Mazda triggers the 5,000-mile oil interval only from prolonged idling, unpaved or dusty roads and sustained mountain driving.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF: Schedule 2
These two work differently again. Mazda lists nine severe conditions and any one of them moves the car to Schedule 2 in full — and extremely hot conditions, extremely humid climates and repeated short-distance driving are all on that list. Schedule 2 brings 5,000-mile tire rotations, 5,000-mile brake inspections and 30,000-mile manual transmission oil. The oil itself stays on the flexible wrench-indicator interval unless the car is idled heavily or driven in dust.

Mazda Says Periodic Replacement Is Unnecessary
On the CX-5 that is Mazda’s own sentence. On the CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-90 and the two plug-in hybrids the footnote reads that replacement is necessary when the component is submerged in water — a flood instruction rather than a schedule. Either way, there is no mileage to sell against.
Two Models Are Outside This Answer
The CX-50 Hybrid has no transfer case row anywhere in its manual, so no service is stated for it. The MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF are rear-wheel drive and have no transfer case.
Mazda Transfer Case Service Questions
How often should a Mazda transfer case be serviced?⌄
Mazda publishes no interval. On the CX-5 its Lubricant Quality table states that periodic replacement is unnecessary; on the CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-90 and both plug-in hybrids the footnote says replacement is necessary when the component is submerged in water.
What fluid does the Mazda transfer case take?⌄
Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1, in a capacity of approximately 0.35 L (0.37 US qt) on the CX-30, 0.40 L (0.42 US qt) on the CX-5 and CX-50, and 0.51 L (0.54 US qt) on the CX-70, CX-90 and the plug-in hybrids.
Does the CX-50 Hybrid have a transfer case?⌄
Mazda’s manual for it contains no transfer case row — not in the schedule, not in the Lubricant Quality table and not in the capacities table — where the gas CX-50 has all three. We will not state a service Mazda does not publish for that model.
Should I change it after driving through flood water?⌄
That is the one case Mazda names. Its footnote for these models says replacement is necessary when the component is submerged in water, so if the car has been through deep water it is worth telling us.
