Mazda Transmission Service
This is one of the few places where Mazda gives a straight answer that saves you money: on most of the lineup it states in its own Lubricant Quality table that periodic replacement of the automatic transmission fluid is unnecessary. Two models are exceptions, and the MX-5 manual gearbox has a real scheduled service.

Which Fluid Your Mazda Takes
Four different specifications across twelve models, which is why a generic transmission fluid is not an answer.
Mazda Genuine ATF FZ
For the Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback, CX-30, CX-5 and CX-50 — approximately 7.6 to 8.0 L (8.0 to 8.5 US qt) depending on the engine, and 7.7 L (8.1 US qt) on the CX-5.
Mazda Original Oil ATF-A7
For the CX-70, CX-90 and both plug-in hybrids — approximately 8.5 L (9.0 US qt) on the CX-70 and CX-90 and 8.1 L (8.6 US qt) on the plug-in hybrids.
The Two Outliers
The CX-50 Hybrid takes ATF WS JWS3324, approximately 3.9 L (4.1 US qt), which is neither of the above. The MX-5 automatic takes Mazda Genuine JWS3309, approximately 7.2 L (7.6 US qt).
The Manual Gearboxes
The MX-5 pair take Mazda Original Long Life Gear Oil IS, approximately 2.0 L (2.1 US qt). The Mazda3 Hatchback’s manual takes Mazda Long Life Gear Oil G7, approximately 1.65 L (1.74 US qt) — and Mazda publishes no replacement interval for it, so the MX-5 figures must not be borrowed for it.
Towing Is the Condition That Actually Counts
And it applies to one model. Mazda’s heavily-loaded-vehicle footnote on the CX-50 Hybrid is a different test from the three severe-driving conditions that shorten the oil interval, and the two must not be merged.
Eight Models: No Weather Condition at All
On the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90 and CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, Mazda lists three severe-driving conditions: extended idling or low-speed operation, driving mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. Heat, humidity and rain are not on the list. If none of those describes how you drive, Mazda’s normal schedule is the one for your car.
CX-50 Hybrid: A Fourth Condition, for Load
The CX-50 Hybrid carries the same three conditions plus one more, and it is about load rather than weather: a heavily loaded vehicle — towing a trailer, using a camper, using a car-top carrier. Mazda maps that fourth condition to the transmission fluid and both differential oils, inspected at 20,000 miles and replaced at 40,000 miles, and not to the oil.
CX-5: Humidity Counts, Item by Item
The CX-5 is the one model where Mazda maps each severe condition to specific items rather than to the whole car. Extremely humid climates and extensive brake use move the brake fluid to annual replacement; short trips, extreme heat and heavy rain move the drive belt inspection to every oil change. Mazda triggers the 5,000-mile oil interval only from prolonged idling, unpaved or dusty roads and sustained mountain driving.
MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF: Schedule 2
These two work differently again. Mazda lists nine severe conditions and any one of them moves the car to Schedule 2 in full — and extremely hot conditions, extremely humid climates and repeated short-distance driving are all on that list. Schedule 2 brings 5,000-mile tire rotations, 5,000-mile brake inspections and 30,000-mile manual transmission oil. The oil itself stays on the flexible wrench-indicator interval unless the car is idled heavily or driven in dust.

Mazda’s Answer on Most Models Is That You Do Not Need It
The Lubricant Quality table for the Mazda3 Sedan and Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 Plug-In Hybrid, CX-90, CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF states that periodic replacement is unnecessary for the automatic transmission fluid. That is Mazda’s own wording and it is worth knowing before a transmission flush is offered to you on a mileage.
The Two Real Exceptions
The MX-5 manual gearbox has a genuine scheduled service — 60,000 miles or 4 years, halving to 30,000 miles or 2 years under Schedule 2. And on the CX-50 Hybrid used as a heavily loaded vehicle, Mazda schedules an inspection at 20,000 miles and replacement at 40,000 miles. The CX-5 is a third case: its table carries neither a fluid row nor the "unnecessary" footnote, so the question is open and this page states no CX-5 interval.

The CX-5 is the one model where this is genuinely open. Its scheduled maintenance table carries no automatic transmission fluid row, and unlike the transfer case and rear differential rows it carries no "periodic replacement is unnecessary" footnote either. Mazda neither schedules a change nor says one is unnecessary, so no interval is stated here.
Does the MX-5 manual gearbox need servicing?⌄
Yes, and it is the only scheduled transmission service in the family. Mazda replaces the manual transmission oil every 60,000 miles or 4 years under Schedule 1 and every 30,000 miles or 2 years under Schedule 2, using Mazda Original Long Life Gear Oil IS.
I tow with my CX-50 Hybrid. Does that change anything?⌄
Yes.
