2021 Mazda CX-5 Maintenance Schedule

This is the last CX-5 model year whose U.S. tables carry a SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 diesel block — a diesel air filter, fuel filter, exhaust fluid and glow plug row that no later CX-5 table prints — and the first that drops the rear differential and transfer oil rows. Every gasoline figure on it is the one Mazda kept printing afterwards. This page states that model year’s own two tables and no other year’s.

What Is Different About This Model Year

The reason this model year has its own page instead of pointing at the current CX-5’s.

Mazda Published This Table for This Model Year Alone

Mazda revised the published schedule at this model year. It revised it again at the next one, so this table belongs to this model year and to no other. What that means for the table below is set out in the cards that follow.

The Diesel Rows Are Still on This Table

This model year’s tables carry a SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 block that no later CX-5 table prints: a diesel air filter cleaned and replaced across the Schedule 1 columns, a diesel fuel filter replaced every 22,500 miles, diesel exhaust fluid for the SCR system, a glow plug row and a diesel drive-belt row. A CX-5 of this model year can be a diesel; the ones that follow it cannot, which is a real difference in content even though no gasoline figure moves with it.

The Rear Differential and Transfer Oil Rows Are Gone

The model year before this one prints rear differential oil and transfer oil at a single column on each schedule, carrying a footnote and no interval. This model year removes both rows and the footnote with them, and Mazda says nothing at all about them from here on. Nothing is stated for them on this page in either direction.

Two Gasoline Engines on the Header

The tables are headed SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 and SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T. The model year before this one lists a SKYACTIV®-G 2.0 as well. No stated interval moves with the change — what changes is which cars the table covers, and a car with that engine is read on its own model year’s page rather than this one.

What Did Not Move

Every gasoline figure here is the one Mazda kept printing for the rest of this generation: a Schedule 1 ceiling of 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles), a 22,500-mile air filter, a 15,000-mile cabin air filter on the normal table and 30,000 miles on the severe one, a 7,500-mile tire rotation, and spark plugs at 40,000 miles on the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T and 75,000 miles on every other engine.

How This Model Year’s Table Is Built

Mazda’s own structure, described so you can read your own manual with confidence.

Two tables, not one. Schedule 1 is the normal-driving table for U.S.A. and Puerto Rico residents and has eight columns; Schedule 2 is the severe-driving table and has twelve. A figure from one is not an answer about the other, so every figure on this page is labelled with the table it is printed in.
Schedule 1’s columns run 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 months against 7,500, 15,000, 22,500, 30,000, 37,500, 45,000, 52,500 and 60,000 miles. A row marked at every column falls due every 7,500 miles or 12 months; a row marked at every other column falls due at twice that.
Schedule 2’s twelve columns run 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66 and 72 months against 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 25,000, 30,000, 35,000, 40,000, 45,000, 50,000, 55,000 and 60,000 miles.
Mazda’s own symbols: I is inspect, and Mazda defines that as inspect and clean, repair, adjust, fill up or replace if necessary. R is replace, T is tighten, C is clean, and the diesel rows add L for lubricate and D for drain. Some rows are printed as sentences rather than as marks in the grid, and where they are, the sentence governs.
This page covers one model year. The current CX-5 is on a different table and a different model of severe service; it is covered on the Mazda CX-5 maintenance schedule page, and the two are not interchangeable in either direction.

Schedule 1 — Normal Driving

This model year’s normal-driving table, grouped by the interval Mazda marks each row at.

Marked at Every Column
Every 7,500 Miles or 12 Months
Engine oil and filter, on the flexible basis Mazda prints for this model year: replace when the wrench indicator light is ON, with a maximum interval of 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles). The printed figure is a ceiling and the wrench indication arrives before it is reached.
Disc brakes, inspected at every one of the eight columns.
Tire rotation, printed as a sentence rather than as marks: rotate every 12,000 km (7,500 miles).
Marked at Every Other Column
Every 15,000 Miles or 24 Months
Cabin air filter, fuel lines and hoses, brake lines, hoses and connections, steering operation and linkages, front and rear suspension with ball joints and wheel bearing axial play, and driveshaft dust boots.
The bolts and nuts on the chassis and body sit at the same columns but carry T rather than I, so they are tightened rather than inspected.
The Longer Rows
22,500 Miles and Beyond
Every 22,500 miles or 36 months — air filter, drive belts. Every 30,000 miles or 48 months — hoses and tubes for emission. At 37,500 miles or 60 months, once — exhaust system and heat shields, which Mazda marks a single time. Every 40,000 miles — spark plugs on the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T, and every 75,000 miles on every other engine, with no month figure printed for either. At 120,000 miles or 10 years, then every 60,000 miles or 5 years — engine coolant.
The emergency flat tire repair kit is inspected annually, as if equipped.
There is no rear differential oil or transfer oil row on either of this model year’s schedules. Mazda removed both rows and their footnote, so this page states nothing for them.
There is no brake fluid replacement row in Schedule 1 for this model year. Mazda schedules a brake and clutch fluid level inspection on Schedule 2 and no replacement on the normal table, so this page states none.
The Diesel Block
SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 Only
A SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 car carries rows a gasoline one does not. On Schedule 1 the diesel air filter is cleaned at 7,500, 15,000, 30,000, 37,500, 52,500 and 60,000 miles and replaced at 22,500 and 45,000 miles; the diesel fuel filter is replaced every 22,500 miles; the drive belts are inspected every 22,500 miles.
Diesel exhaust fluid for the SCR system is marked at every column, footnoted: top up with new diesel exhaust fluid in the urea tank once a year, and check the total driving mileage for the last three years — if 19,200 km (12,000 miles) or more, top up; if less, replace.
The glow plug row is footnoted rather than scheduled: replace when the glow indicator light is continuously ON.

Sourced from the Scheduled Maintenance (U.S.A., Canada, and Puerto Rico) section of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 owner’s manual, document CX-5_8JM9-EA-20G_Edition1, section pages 520 to 526, and confirmed line for line against Mazda’s own standalone scheduled-maintenance excerpt for the same model year. No other model year’s manual was used. The Canada residents table and the Mexico section printed in the same manual are out of scope here. Your own manual is the authority for your vehicle; bring the mileage and our team will read the table with you. For this model year specifically, Mazda’s own book is document CX-5_8JM9-EA-20G_Edition1_old 2020-6-2 — the one to check your vehicle against.

Which Schedule Applies to Your CX-5

On this model year the answer is a property of the whole car, not of one row.

Mazda’s Own Condition List

Repeated short-distance driving; driving in dusty conditions; driving with extended use of brakes; driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are used; driving on rough or muddy roads; extended periods of idling or low-speed operation; driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates; driving in extremely hot conditions; driving in mountainous conditions continually. Mazda prints: follow Schedule 1 if none of these apply, and if any do apply, follow Schedule 2.

It Is the Whole Car, Not One Row

On this model year a single condition moves the entire schedule to Schedule 2. The current CX-5’s manual does something different: it maps each condition to specific items and leaves every other row on its normal interval. Two different models of severe service, and neither may be written the other one’s way — which is the main reason this page exists separately from its parent.

Flexible and Fixed Are a Separate Question

Mazda’s flexible engine-oil maintenance is offered to U.S.A. and Puerto Rico residents whose car is not operated with extended periods of idling or low-speed operation, such as a police car, taxi or driving-school car, and is not driven in dusty conditions. Where either applies, fixed maintenance is followed — engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months — even on Schedule 2. So the 5,000-mile oil figure is not the severe interval for every CX-5 driven in severe conditions.

Rows That Are Not for This Market

The same manual prints a Canada residents table and a separate Mexico section. Neither is quoted on this page, and a change Mazda made only to the Canada table is not a change to the table a Mobile CX-5 is read on. Which of the two U.S. tables your car is on is a question about how it is driven, and our service team will go through the condition list with you.

Schedule 2 — Severe Driving

The severe-driving table for this model year, gasoline rows and diesel rows kept apart.

Every 5,000 Miles or 6 Months

Engine oil and filter on the fixed basis, disc brakes, engine coolant level, brake and clutch fluid level, tire inflation pressure and tire wear, function of all lights, all locks and hinges lubricated, and washer fluid level. Tire rotation runs at the same cadence and is printed as a sentence: rotate every 8,000 km (5,000 miles).

Every 15,000 Miles or 18 Months

Fuel lines and hoses, brake lines, hoses and connections, steering operation and linkages, front and rear suspension with ball joints and wheel bearing axial play, driveshaft dust boots, and the bolts and nuts on the chassis and body. The same rows sit at every 15,000 miles or 24 months on Schedule 1 — the mileage matches and the month figure does not, which is exactly why the two tables are quoted separately.

The Longer Severe Rows

Every 20,000 miles or 24 months — drive belts. Every 30,000 miles or 36 months — air filter, and hoses and tubes for emission. At 35,000 miles or 42 months, once — exhaust system and heat shields. Every 30,000 miles or 2 years — cabin air filter, printed as a sentence. Spark plugs and engine coolant carry the same figures they carry on Schedule 1, and the emergency flat tire repair kit is inspected annually. Mazda adds one note to the severe air filter row: if the vehicle is operated in very dusty or sandy areas, clean and if necessary replace the air filter more often than the recommended intervals.

The Diesel Rows on Schedule 2

A SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 car carries its own severe rows: the diesel air filter is cleaned at ten of the twelve columns and replaced at 30,000 and 60,000 miles; the diesel fuel filter is replaced every 20,000 miles; diesel exhaust fluid for the SCR system and the diesel drive belts are marked at every other column, every 10,000 miles; and the glow plug row sits at the 35,000-mile column carrying the same footnote it carries on Schedule 1. None of it applies to a gasoline CX-5.

Why This Model Year Has Its Own Page

It is the last CX-5 model year whose U.S. tables carry the SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 diesel rows, and the first that drops the rear differential and transfer oil rows. Every gasoline figure on it matches the tables Mazda printed afterwards, so the difference is which car the table is about rather than which interval it states — and that is still a difference a diesel owner has to be able to find. The current CX-5 is a different table again and is covered on the Mazda CX-5 maintenance schedule page.

Schedule 1 and Schedule 2

Schedule 1 is the normal-driving table and hangs off a maximum interval of 12 months or 7,500 miles. Schedule 2 is the severe-driving table and marks its shortest rows at 6 months or 5,000 miles. On this model year Mazda moves the whole car onto Schedule 2 if any condition on its own list applies, so which table you read is settled by how the car is driven rather than by which rows you happen to care about.

Booking and Pricing

Service pricing moves, so it lives on the service offers page rather than being written into this one — what you read there is current. Book through the service scheduler, or see the rest of what we do for the CX-5 at the Mazda service center.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Maintenance Schedule Questions

What is the maintenance schedule for a 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Mazda prints two tables for this model year. Schedule 1, for normal driving, hangs off a maximum interval of 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles) and marks each row at the columns it falls on. Schedule 2, for severe driving, runs on a grid of 6 months and 5,000 miles. Which of the two applies is settled by Mazda’s own condition list rather than by preference.

Does the diesel CX-5 have a different schedule?

It has extra rows rather than different gasoline ones. A SKYACTIV®-D 2.2 car of this model year carries a diesel air filter cleaned and replaced across the Schedule 1 columns, a diesel fuel filter replaced every 22,500 miles on Schedule 1 and every 20,000 miles on Schedule 2, diesel exhaust fluid for the SCR system, and a glow plug row that is footnoted rather than scheduled. Every gasoline figure is the same whichever engine is under the hood.

How often is the cabin air filter replaced on a 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Every 15,000 miles or 24 months on Schedule 1. On Schedule 2 Mazda prints: replace every 48,000 km (30,000 miles) or 2 years.

Does this page apply to a newer CX-5?

No. It states the schedule printed in this model year’s own owner’s manual and nothing else. The current CX-5 is on a different table and a different model of severe service, and it is covered on the Mazda CX-5 maintenance schedule page.

How much is maintenance for a 2021 Mazda CX-5 at Dean McCrary Mazda?

Service pricing moves, so it lives on one page that is kept current rather than being written into pages like this one. Current offers are on the service offers page, and our service team will confirm the figure for your CX-5 when you book.
